For Gas Ranges: The BTU Rule

Gas burners produce massive amounts of heat and combustion byproducts. The golden rule is: 100 CFM for every 10,000 BTUs of total burner output.

Example: If your pro-style gas range has four burners totaling 60,000 BTUs, you will need a range hood with at least 600 CFM.

For Electric & Induction Cooktops: The Linear Foot Rule

Since electric stoves don't produce thermal gas plumes, the calculation is based on the width of your cooktop: 100 CFM for every 10 inches of cooktop width.
